CBST Study Guide
Last updated: October 2026
The short version: the Criteria Basic Skills Test is 40 questions in 20 minutes, learned skills rather than raw aptitude, and the score is decided by accuracy at 30 seconds a question — the items get harder as you go, and there is no guessing penalty so you never leave a blank. Because the material is reviewable (arithmetic, grammar, spelling, vocabulary), a few focused days of prep move this score directly.
Skills test, not aptitude test
The CBST checks learned basic skills rather than raw aptitude. The format:
| CBST | ||
|---|---|---|
| Publisher | Criteria Corp | Criteria Corp |
| Questions / time | 40 in 20 minutes | 50 in 15 minutes |
| Seconds per question | 30 | ~18 |
| What it measures | Learned basic skills: reading, grammar, spelling, arithmetic | Cognitive aptitude: verbal, numerical, spatial reasoning |
| Difficulty curve | Increases through the test | Adaptive-feeling mix; broadly flat |
| Guessing penalty | None | None |
| Scoring | Raw 0-40 + Verbal/Math percentiles | Raw count + percentile |
| Cutoffs | Employer cutoff per role | Employer percentile cutoffs |
The six question families
Our CBST practice test bank follows the standard weighting:
- Basic numeracy — arithmetic word problems, percentages, decimals, and fractions framed in workplace situations (invoices, schedules, rates).
- Spelling — picking the correctly (or incorrectly) spelled word among near-misses. Learnable by drilling common traps.
- Grammar and punctuation — subject-verb agreement, verb tense, pronouns, apostrophes in sentence context.
- Vocabulary — word meanings in context.
- Reading comprehension — short policies, memos, and notices; the answer is always in the text, the skill is finding it fast.
- Attention to detail — matching names, codes, and numbers against a reference list and spotting the mismatch.
How the score reads
You get a raw score out of 40 plus separate Verbal Ability and Math Skills percentiles. There is no universal pass mark — each employer sets a cutoff for the role. If your recruiter or invite names a target, aim above it with margin; if not, treat every additional correct answer as directly buying percentile points.
A five-day curriculum
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Format literacy: read the test format page, take one timed sample, count how many you finish at 30 seconds a question. |
| 2 | Numeracy drills: percentages, rates, fractions, and word-problem setups. The highest-return math block. |
| 3 | Verbal fundamentals: apostrophe and agreement rules, common spelling traps, vocabulary in context. |
| 4 | Full timed run under test conditions: 40 questions, 20-minute clock, no pause. Mark every question that cost over 45 seconds. |
| 5 | Second full run, plus a review of the over-time list and attention-to-detail misses. Light or nothing on day 6 if the test is day 7. |
The single clock rule
30 seconds per question, no blanks. The items increase in difficulty, so the early questions are where you bank time — don't overspend there either, but never let a hard tail question eat two minutes. With no guessing penalty, an unanswered question is a guaranteed miss while a guess is a coin flip in your favor. Answer everything, even at random, and save the care for the attention-to-detail items where one second of double-checking pays.

Frequently asked questions
How is the CBST scored?
Raw score out of 40 (number correct) plus Verbal Ability and Math Skills percentiles. Each employer sets its own cutoff for the role, so there is no universal pass mark.
How hard is the CBST?
The content is near middle- and high-school level. The difficulty is the clock (30 seconds per question) and a difficulty curve that rises through the test. Because the material is learned rather than innate, targeted review raises scores directly.
Is there a penalty for guessing on the CBST?
No. There is no guessing penalty, so an unanswered question is strictly worse than a guess. If a question has eaten 30 seconds, pick your best option and move on.
