PI Cognitive Study Guide
Last updated: October 2026
The short version: the PI Cognitive Assessment is 50 questions in 12 minutes, near school-level content, and the score is decided by pacing, not knowledge — about 14 seconds a question, a 30-second cap on anything that stalls you, never leave a blank because there is no guessing penalty.

The three question families
Our PI Cognitive practice test bank follows the standard weighting:
- Numerical — word problems pulled from pricing, ratios, percentages, and averages, plus number series. The math is easy; doing it in 14 seconds is the skill.
- Abstract (figural) — shape sequences, letter patterns, matrices, and odd-one-out items. The rule is always on screen; the trainable skill is naming it in seconds.
- Verbal — vocabulary, word relationships, and short analogies. The fastest items when you know the word, the slowest when you don't — which is why triage matters here.
How the score reads
You get two numbers: a raw score out of 50 and a scaled score on a 100-450 scale. There is no universal pass mark — each employer sets a target score for the role, and the same raw score can clear one role and miss another. If your recruiter or invite names a target, aim above it with margin; if not, treat every extra finished question as directly buying scaled points.
A five-day curriculum
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Format literacy: read the test format page, take one timed sample, count how many you finish at 14 seconds a question. |
| 2 | Numerical drills: word problems, percentages, ratios, averages, number series. The biggest and highest-return block. |
| 3 | Abstract patterns at speed: letter series, shape sequences, matrices. Name the rule before looking at the options. |
| 4 | Full timed run under test conditions: 50 questions, 12-minute clock, no pause. Mark every question that cost over 30 seconds. |
| 5 | Second full run, plus a review of the over-time list. Light or nothing on day 6 if the test is day 7. |
The single clock rule
About 14 seconds per question, no blanks. The test is calibrated so most candidates leave questions unfinished; that is the design, not your failure. With no guessing penalty, an unanswered question is a guaranteed miss while a guess is a coin flip in your favor. Answer everything, even at random, and save the clock discipline for the numerical block where the points are.

Frequently asked questions
How is the PI Cognitive Assessment scored?
Scores are reported raw out of 50 and on a 100-450 scale. Each employer sets its own target score for the role, so there is no universal pass mark.
How hard is the PI Cognitive Assessment?
The individual questions are near school-level difficulty. The hardness is arithmetic: 50 questions in 12 minutes is about 14 seconds a question. Most candidates do not finish, and that is by design.
Is there a penalty for guessing on the PI Cognitive Assessment?
No. There is no guessing penalty, so an unanswered question is strictly worse than a guess. If a question has eaten 30 seconds, pick your best option and move on.
