Wonderlic Practice Test

Last updated: October 2026

The Wonderlic Personnel Test is a 50-question, 12-minute multiple-choice test used for pre-employment screening. It measures verbal, numerical, and logical reasoning under a hard clock — about 24 seconds per question. Scores are reported as number correct out of 50; the average is around 20, and 20-30 is competitive for most roles.

What the Wonderlic actually measures

Like the CCAT, the Wonderlic is not an IQ test and not a knowledge test. It measures how quickly and accurately you solve unfamiliar problems, which is why employers use it as a proxy for learning ability. It is best known from the NFL Combine, but its main use is ordinary hiring: banks, pharmaceutical companies, and logistics firms screen candidates with it every day.

The question types

The two rules that decide your score

  1. The clock is the test. Almost nobody finishes all 50 questions in 12 minutes. Your score is how many you answer correctly before time runs out, so per-question pacing matters more than perfection.
  2. Wrong answers don't count against you. There is no penalty for guessing, so never leave a blank. If a question stalls you, guess and keep moving.

How to prepare

  1. Learn the format first. Knowing that 24 seconds per question is the norm changes how you attack every item. Most of the disadvantage unprepared test-takers have is pacing shock, not content.
  2. Drill the series and data-check items untimed. These follow a small set of rules. Learn the rules cold, then add the clock back.
  3. Practice in 12-minute blocks. Stamina under time pressure is the skill you are actually building.
  4. Know the score bands. A raw score around 20 is average; 20-30 is competitive for most roles. Some employers publish minimum scores — check yours before you practice.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the Wonderlic?

50 multiple-choice questions in 12 minutes — about 24 seconds per question on average.

What is a good Wonderlic score?

Scores are reported as number correct out of 50. The average is about 20, and the 20-30 band is competitive for most roles. Some employers and programs set higher targets.

Is there a penalty for wrong answers?

No. Answer everything. A guessed answer can only help your score; a blank cannot.

Is the Wonderlic the same as an IQ test?

No. It's a hiring aptitude test, similar in spirit to the CCAT. It measures speed and accuracy on unfamiliar problems, not accumulated knowledge.

How is the Wonderlic different from the CCAT?

Both are 50-question cognitive screens, but the Wonderlic gives 12 minutes to the CCAT's 15, so its pace is tighter. The question families overlap heavily — math word problems, series, logic, and vocabulary — so preparation for one transfers well to the other.
