Wonderlic Study Guide
Last updated: October 2026
The short version: the Wonderlic Personnel Test is 50 questions in 12 minutes, mostly school-level content, and the score is decided by pacing, not knowledge - about 24 seconds a question, 30-second cap on anything that stalls you, never leave a blank because there is no guessing penalty. If you have already trained for the CCAT, you are most of the way there; the differences are on this page.
Is it all the same thing?
This is the first question most people ask, because CCAT and Wonderlic get used interchangeably in job postings. They are not the same test, but they are close cousins:
| Wonderlic (WPT) | CCAT | |
|---|---|---|
| Publisher | Wonderlic, Inc. | Criteria Corp |
| Questions / time | 50 in 12 minutes | 50 in 15 minutes |
| Seconds per question | ~24 | ~18 |
| Guessing penalty | None | None |
| Spatial/figural items | Rare to absent on standard forms | Present (shape rotation, patterns) |
| Average score | ~20 of 50 | ~24 of 50 |
Both are cognitive aptitude screens built for hiring: verbal reasoning, numerical problem solving, and logic under a clock. Some employers administer both (the Wonderlic directly, or Criteria's platform for other roles), so prepare for whichever one is actually on your invite, and the other will feel like a slightly re-weighted version of it.
Do the tests use the same questions?
No. Wonderlic rotates a large item bank across multiple forms, and the same is true of Criteria for the CCAT. Any site promising "real Wonderlic questions" is either selling recycled material, or the questions were never real to begin with. What does repeat is style: each test draws from a small set of question families, and knowing the families is the trainable part. That is how we build our banks too - to specification, not to a leaked form.
The four question families
Our Wonderlic practice test bank matches the standard Personnel Test weighting:
- Numerical - the largest block. Word problems pulled from pricing, ratios, percentages, averages; plus quick arithmetic and number series. The math is easy; doing it in 24 seconds is the skill.
- Data checks and quick facts - order a set of dates, spot the earliest latest, compare values at a glance. Cheap points if you know what to look for.
- Logical - if-then deduction, series completion, next-in-sequence. No outside knowledge needed, but the clock punishes re-reading.
- Verbal - synonyms, antonyms, word meanings. The smallest block, and the hardest to raise with study, so it is where the least prep time should go.
Note what is missing: the standard Wonderlic Personnel Test does not lean on spatial or figural reasoning the way the CCAT does. The Wonderlic SLE (the Scholastic-Level variant used by some schools) follows the same family split.
Numbers to aim for
| Raw score | How it reads |
|---|---|
| ~20 | Average. Meets many general screens. |
| 20-30 | The common band. Covers most published employer minimums. |
| 31+ | Selective. Often cited for analyst, pharmacist, and executive screening. |
| ~22+ | NFL Combine level for many positions - the test's most famous setting. |
There is no official pass mark. Each employer sets its own minimum, and some weight scores differently by role, so treat the table as orientation, not a cutoff list.
A five-day curriculum
Shorter than the CCAT guide because the format is tighter (12 minutes, one clock rule rather than three):
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Format literacy: read the test format page, take one timed sample, count how many you finish at 24 seconds a question. |
| 2 | Numerical drills: word problems, percentages, ratios, averages. This is the biggest and highest-return block. |
| 3 | Data checks and logical deduction at speed. Ten seconds of difference here is two or three extra questions. |
| 4 | Full timed run under test conditions: 50 questions, 12-minute clock, no pause. Mark every question that cost over 30 seconds. |
| 5 | Second full run, plus a review of the over-time list. Light or nothing on day 6 if the test is day 7. |
The single clock rule
About 24 seconds per question, no blanks. The Wonderlic is calibrated so most candidates leave questions unfinished; that is the design, not your failure. With no guessing penalty, an unanswered question is a guaranteed miss while a guess is a coin flip in your favor. Answer everything, even at random, and save the clock discipline for the numerical block where the points are.
Where the rest lives

TestPrep.me writes all of its practice questions to specification rather than copying real test items; Wonderlic, Inc. does not publish its item bank, and no prep source has the live forms.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Wonderlic the same as the CCAT?
They are different tests from different publishers that measure the same idea. The Wonderlic (Wonderlic Personnel Test) is 50 questions in 12 minutes; the CCAT (Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test) is 50 questions in 15 minutes. Both mix verbal, numerical, and logic items under a brutal clock, and both are scored on raw correct answers.
Do Wonderlic tests use the same questions?
No. Wonderlic maintains a large rotating item bank and multiple test forms, so two candidates rarely see identical papers. Practicing a fixed question list from a leaked form will not transfer; training the four question families and the pacing does.
What is a good Wonderlic score?
The test is scored out of 50 raw correct answers. About 20 is the accepted average; 20 to 30 covers the common band employers screen in; some selective employers look for 31 or higher, and published NFL Combine expectations sit near 20 for many positions.
How hard is the Wonderlic test?
Individually the questions are close to school-level difficulty. The hardness is arithmetic: 50 questions in 12 minutes is about 24 seconds a question, which is tighter than the CCAT's 18 seconds per question in 15 minutes. Most candidates do not finish, and that is by design.
Is there a penalty for guessing on the Wonderlic?
No. The Wonderlic Personnel Test has no guessing penalty, so an unanswered question is strictly worse than a guess. If a question has eaten 30 seconds, pick your best option and move on.
