The Shopify Assessment Test

Last updated: September 2026

Shopify uses Criteria assessments for some roles. Candidate reports describe two shapes: the standard CCAT — 50 questions, 15 minutes — and a shorter 40-question, 20-minute reasoning form, which matches Criteria's UCAT. Both reward the same thing: speed under a hard clock. Check your invitation for the count and time you were given.

Why Shopify uses a cognitive test

Shopify hires at scale across many teams and countries, and it's known for a nontraditional interview process. A timed aptitude test is a consistent screen: it measures how quickly you handle unfamiliar problems, independent of background or connections. Whether you agree with the practice or not, the useful move is to treat the assessment as its own skill and train it.

The invite, first-hand (November 2025)

This is what a real Shopify assessment invite looks like — confirmed first-hand from a November 2025 candidate email sent directly from Criteria (criteriacorp.com):

What the test looks like

Two formats show up in candidate reports. Your invitation tells you which one you have.

If it's 50 questions in 15 minutes (CCAT)

If it's 40 questions in 20 minutes

That shorter form is Criteria's UCAT. See the UCAT guide and practice for the full breakdown.

Some Criteria batteries also add an untimed personality or work-style section. There are no right answers there; answer consistently and don't rush it.

A one-week prep plan that fits around a job search

  1. Day 1: one full set at your invitation's timing, no breaks. Expect to run out of time. The point is calibration.
  2. Days 2–3: drill your two weakest categories untimed. Learn the pattern rules (figure series and number series follow a small set of progressions). Skip verbal drills if you have the 40-in-20 form.
  3. Day 4: second full set. Use the 5-second rule: if the logic isn't visible quickly, guess and move.
  4. Days 5–6: alternate category drills and full sets. Never leave a blank in any run.
  5. Day 7: one final full set, then stop. Review the pacing, not the questions.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify use the CCAT?

Shopify uses Criteria assessments for some roles. Candidate reports describe both the standard CCAT (50 questions, 15 minutes) and a 40-question, 20-minute form. The process varies by team, so confirm the details from your own invitation.

How do I tell which format I got?

50 questions in 15 minutes is the CCAT. 40 questions in 20 minutes, with no vocabulary questions, is Criteria's non-verbal form (the UCAT). Both are timed, multiple choice, and scored on correct answers only.

What score do I need?

The cutoff is the employer's and isn't published. Scores are percentiles against a professional norm group, so train against the clock rather than aiming at a raw number. See the score guide.

Is it proctored?

Depends on the role and administration. Some Criteria assessments are recorded for identity verification; your invitation decides that. Set up early and clear your desk.

Can I practice the exact questions?

The items are proprietary and unpublished. What transfers is format and pacing — that's what our practice test trains.
