The PowerSchool Assessment Test
Last updated: September 2026
PowerSchool — the education software provider and Vista Equity portfolio company — screens candidates with Criteria assessments, and candidate reports describe both formats: the standard CCAT (50 questions, 15 minutes) and the shorter, language-independent UCAT (40 questions, 20 minutes). Your invitation tells you which one you got. Reported bar: around the 70th percentile for many roles.
Why PowerSchool uses cognitive testing
PowerSchool builds the software that runs student information, enrollment, and analytics for tens of thousands of schools. Under Vista Equity's standardized hiring playbook, Criteria assessments give every candidate the same objective first screen — useful at a company that hires across engineering, consulting, and customer-facing roles at scale.
Format 1: the CCAT (50 questions, 15 minutes)
- Verbal (synonyms, sentence logic, true/false analysis), numerical (word problems, series, ratios), and spatial (figure series, matrices) reasoning
- ~18 seconds per question — almost nobody finishes
- Guessing is free (wrong = blank), and there's no going back
- Scratch paper yes, calculator no
Format 2: the UCAT (40 questions, 20 minutes)
- Same family, friendlier pace: 30 seconds per question
- No verbal section — it's Criteria's language-independent form: numerical reasoning, logic & analysis, attention to detail, and spatial reasoning
- Same rules: multiple choice, one clock, no going back, guessing free
See the UCAT guide and practice for the full breakdown of the shorter format.
Which one will you get?
Check your invitation — it states the count and time. Reports from PowerSchool candidates show both formats in use, with the UCAT form appearing more often in consulting-track and account-management screening, and the CCAT in analyst and technical roles. Either way the prep logic is identical: it's a pacing test, and practice closes the gap.
How to prepare
- Identify your format from the invite, then train that exact shape — 50/15 or 40/20.
- Run full timed sets daily for a week. Calibration is the whole game; the questions don't get harder than the clock.
- CCAT takers: drill mental math (no calculator) and figure-series patterns; bank the fast verbal items.
- UCAT takers: attention-to-detail items are your fastest points — bank them early, then grind the logic and spatial sets.
- Skip rule: ~20 seconds without commitment, guess and move. Never leave a blank.

Frequently asked questions
What score do I need?
Unpublished. Vista-portfolio norms suggest ~70th percentile for many roles (low 30s/50 on the CCAT); entry roles report lower bars, product and management higher. Train to hit 32+ comfortably in timed practice.
Can I retake it?
Employer-controlled, typically 6–12 months. Treat your first attempt as the attempt.
Do I see my score?
No — candidates get no score report. The CCAT score guide explains what employers see and what's considered strong.
Is the PowerSchool assessment proctored?
Varies by role. Assume quiet, solo, one sitting — the no-restart rule makes interruptions expensive either way.
